Fun fact: The monasteries of Meteora were built in an era when there were no roads, no helicopters, no modern equipment. Monks reached the summits using removable ladders and nets. It's said that when visitors asked how often the ropes were changed, the monks would reply, "When God lets them break." The isolation was so complete that some monasteries could only be accessed by windlass and rope basket until the 1920s.
