Discover IOANNINA, on a private day tour from Vlora.
🇬🇷 IOANNINA (GREECE) – "The City of Lakes & Legends"
Ioannina is one of Greece's most atmospheric and historic cities, nestled on the western shore of Lake Pamvotida, surrounded by the dramatic Pindus Mountains. The capital of the Epirus region, it's a place where Ottoman minarets rise beside Byzantine churches, where silver workshops preserve centuries-old craftsmanship, and where the ghost of Ali Pasha still haunts the island fortress where he met his violent end.
The city has a unique character, shaped by its multicultural past – Greek, Ottoman, and Jewish communities lived here for centuries, leaving behind a rich architectural and cultural heritage. The old town, with its cobblestone streets and traditional houses, invites you to wander and discover hidden corners at every turn.
What You'll Visit:
🏰 Ioannina Castle (Its Kale) – One of Greece's oldest Byzantine fortresses, dramatically perched on a rocky peninsula jutting into Lake Pamvotida. Within its walls, you'll discover:
- The Fethiye Mosque (Victory Mosque) – Built in 1795, where Ali Pasha prayed.
- Ali Pasha's Tomb – An unmarked grave in the castle courtyard, where the "Lion of Ioannina" was finally laid to rest.
- The Silversmithing Museum – Housed in a beautifully restored Ottoman-era building, showcasing Epirus's famous silver craftsmanship.
🏺 The Ancient Oracle of Dodoni – Just 20 km south of the city lies one of ancient Greece's most revered sanctuaries. The Theater of Dodoni, built in the 3rd century BC, is one of the best-preserved ancient theaters in Greece. Here, pilgrims traveled from across the ancient world to consult Zeus through the rustling leaves of the sacred oak tree.
🏝️ Lake Pamvotida& Nissi Island – A 15-minute boat ride takes you to the charming island of Nissi, where time seems to stand still. Here you'll find:
- The Monastery of St. Panteleimon – The very spot where Ali Pasha was assassinated in 1822. The bullet holes in the floorboards are still visible .
- The Ali Pasha Museum – Personal belongings of the legendary ruler, including his rifle and pipe, displayed in the monastery where he met his end .
- Traditional fish tavernas serving local specialties – including the famous (or infamous) frog legs, exported to France!
🛍️ The Old Bazaar & Silversmith Quarter – Ioannina has been famous for its silver craftsmanship for over 500 years. In the winding streets of the old town, you'll still find artisans working by hand, creating intricate filigree jewelry that's prized throughout Greece .
🧠 Curiosity / Famous Quote:
"Ioannina is a city of ghosts – where every stone whispers stories of pashas, poets, and prophets."
– Greek travel writer
Fun fact: Ioannina is home to the only lake island in Greece with permanent inhabitants – Nissi has just 200 residents, but boasts seven monasteries on its tiny 800-meter length. It's said that Ali Pasha chose to flee here because he believed the monks would protect him. Instead, they betrayed his hiding place to the Sultan's agents. When Ottoman soldiers shot through the monastery floorboards to kill him, Ali reportedly shouted his last words: "What took you so long?"
